World In A Day
From snow-covered peaks and crystal clear mountain lakes to dramatic fiords, glaciers and remote wilderness and wildlife, there’s only one way to fully experience the beauty of New Zealand’s South Island – our ‘World in a Day’ helicopter tour.
Take off from Christchurch and fly over the Canterbury Plains to the breathtaking Waimakariri Gorge, a steep-sided river canyon and gateway to the Southern Alps. A low-level flight through the Gorge takes you to the first stop on your trip, a picturesque riverbank where you can enjoy refreshments while listening to the sound of running water – and maybe spot trout or salmon leaping.
From here it’s a short hop to the land of Narnia – the major location for the filming of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe movie.
The next stage of your tour takes you over lakes, icefalls and waterfalls to land at an idyllic mountaintop in the heart of the Alps, where you can enjoy spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and river valleys.
After this you’ll fly to the true backbone of the South Island – the Main Divide – to get up close and personal with the famous Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, as well as New Zealand’s highest mountain – Aoraki Mount Cook. The scenery here is absolutely spectacular, and your highly-experienced pilot will also share their unique local knowledge.
After a short stop at Franz Josef Township, enjoy a low-level flight down the beautiful West Coast beaches to your next destination – a gourmet lunch with fresh local produce and top quality wines. The location is unique – a rocky promontory jutting out into the Tasman Sea, with two small beaches surrounded by native forest and bush. If you’d like to get off the “beaten track”, look no further; this is the perfect isolated picnic spot with views across the water and back to Mount Cook.
The next part of the tour takes you up the Paringa River, past rugged rainforests and cascading waterfalls. You’ll get the chance to hover next to a waterfall, close enough you can almost reach out and touch it.
Then it’s back into high altitude glacier country, across the Main Divide, past Mount Cook and down the Godley River to stunning Lake Tekapo where you’ll land beside a rustic mountain mustering hut to experience high country farming past and present.
After more refreshments, it’s back home to Christchurch, taking in the stunning “Lord of the Rings” locations as you fly towards the Rangitata River and Mount Hutt. Descending back to the Christchurch Helicentre, you will have experienced a truly unique and unforgettable day.
Flying time is approximately 4 hours, but allow the whole day for this once in a lifetime tour. The tour may vary due to changeable alpine weather conditions.
